Brunchit Organic

brunchit

Although open all day, as the name suggests this little restaurant on the edge of Malaga’s historic centre specialises in breakfast, brunch, and early lunches. It’s the love child of two young entrepeneurs, local Lydia Nieto and her Italian partner Roberto, and both the place and the cuisine have something of an Italian feel. The bar is small and minimalist, featuring exposed brick walls and real wood furnishings. It’s also “geek friendly” with good free WIFI and lots of outlets along the walls and benches for keeping your devices charged up.

Food is locally sourced and organic, and features toasts, muesli, yoghurt and fresh juices, but also bacon, eggs and tomatoes for those looking for something more substantial. Along with the brunch menu (served daily from 9.30 – 15.30) there is also a good burger menu, though they’d do better to opt for a soft burger bun – the dense and chewy organic buns they use are not conducive to hand-held eating.

For me their star product is pizza (in this case the organic crust works very well) which you can order in two sizes, or choose a slice or two from the ever-changing varieties offered at the front counter. Orders must be placed and paid for at the bar, but food and drink are brought to your table. Not much of a wine list – just one red and one white (Italian) by the glass. A nice touch is the large glass urn which dispenses (free) herb and lemon water. Staff are very friendly and, if you have kids, you can sit at the bar in front of the kitchen window and keep them entertained watching the pizza chef tossing dough and making endless pizzas and focaccia.

Sr Lobo Café

Updated September 2015

sr lobo
Although basically a burger and sandwich bar, the recently opened Sr Lobo Cafe is a refreshing change: an independent where the quality of the food is exceptional, and the whole enterprise carried off with such humour and panache. Owner Victor and staff are friendly, welcoming and informative, and this is an important element of what makes this place tick.

The bar is light and open, and the tongue-in-cheek “graffiti” on various sections of the walls is well worth a read. The aforementioned burgers are all made with Retinto beef, a special breed of cow that is native to Cádiz, and are served with very good chips. And aside from the hearty sandwiches, there are salads and snacks such as hummus and nachos. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, be sure to check out the daily specials and lunchtime set menu. It’s a fun spot with a great vibe and has become a must-visit for me.

Café de Estraperlo

Updated September 2017

On the edge of the artsy Soho barrio and a stone’s throw from the Plaza Marina and Málaga Port, this hip and cosy café-bar in a charming little square couldn’t be in a better location. And since construction was completed last year on the Roommate Valeria next door, the square and terraza are more inviting than ever. Open for breakfast, and then for charcuterie snacks and drinks afternoon and evening, along with cocktails, Café de Estraperlo has that perfect neighbourhood bar feel and it’s one of my favourite places to stop in for a glass of wine and a chat. Rumour has it that tapas may soon be happening. Meanwhile you can enjoy the relaxed vibe and also the local art on the walls, which changes on a regular basis.

This was something of a tale of two visits. On my first morning in Antequera, arriving on an early train from Sevilla with a friend, we came here for breakfast as it came highly recommended by my Twitter pals @PolloyEnsalada.  And we weren’t disappointed. This seems to be their forte, the place was busy, and we had one of those great typical Andalusian breakfasts – traditional Antequera molletes with serrano ham, olive oil and tomato, and a “tapa” of churros with hot chocolate (love that in this part of the country you order churros by the “circle”).

On the second evening we came back for tapas, with mixed results. The tapas menu was, shall we say, limited, and even some of those were not available. Then our first order of “secreto al ajillo” was so bad it had to be sent back, and we were debating whether to stay. Full marks at this point to the waiter, who persuaded us to try the gambas al ajillo (actually langostinos), which turned out to be very good, and they also made my friend a nice bocadillo for his journey home that night.
